I was the teacher of 5 sections of this course in past semester. 4 out of 5 sections, most students receive Bs and Cs as their grades. In only one section, most students got As and Bs. I believe that some (very) good students are together, be friends with one another, and want to enroll in the same section. Another assumption is that if few students showed high responsibility and they got admiration in front of other students in the same class, this might encourages others to came to class and pay more attention to the class, too.
I would go for the first assumption. The reason is that I could remember that I taught and acted the same in all classes I had in the particular semester. This is like, students are likely to be friends with the friends with similar attributions. The question is that how the moderate of low-prior-knowledge students would be encouraged to be good students without building a relationship with good students.
