After the end of the semester, Thai students can sign in into their account in university website or mobile application to see their grade of every course. For the place, I was in, the students will not be able to see their grade unless they complete the teacher evaluation.

After teachers receive class evaluation from the system, they need to finish the reports for each class and submit the report to school before the beginning of the next semester.

In Thailand, this report is called, TQF (Thai Qualifications Framework for Higher Education). Its length for each class is 10-15 pages (A4 paper with 16-point font size). Based on the form of TQF, teachers will find the strength and weakness from class evaluation and write about them. The form did not require much writing about strength, but weakness. They will ask if the teachers agree or disagree, and why, and how to improve for the upcoming semester.

For example, teachers can type something like this.

Most parts of class evaluation are good, but I would discuss the part that I got moderate scores, which are “lack of learning support tools” and “lack of knowledge exchanging among students.” The students gave the lowest scores for these two items. Even the lowest scores are moderate (about 4 from 5-point Likert scale), the teacher still need to write about it.

I agree with the first blame (lack of learning support tools) but disagree with the second one (lack of knowledge exchanging among students). In the first month, I taught them to do computer animation by using actual software in computer lab at school. Some of my students asked me for the license of the particular software for them to practice at home. I cannot provide them with the license. I do not have free version of them, because it might be illegal to give away the software. These students also mentioned other lecturers, that those lecturers can give them the software and cracked serial numbers.

Later, after COVID outbreak, I let them use free mobile application. It is legal and free for everyone to use. However, students viewed this kind of application as cheap and not professional.

I will never give away those illegal cracking softwares or serial number generators. It should not be the job of teachers to do this illegal for their students. Therefore, I typed in the report that the school or educational institute should support software license for the students especially for the online class that students have to work on their own laptop.

For the second part that I got low in class evaluation (lack of knowledge exchanging among students). Although they might believe that they got lack of knowledge exchange among friends in class, I strongly confirm that one-fifth of their grade are evaluated based on online-class discussion. I let them group to be 5 groups in class, and each group would summarize the texts about their selected topic. After they posted their summary, they must ask 5 open-ended questions for other friends to answer. This means there are totally 25 questions. Each students have responsibility to answer at least 14 answers by providing the opinions to support the answer.

More than half of students in the class earned full score from this part of grading. Some answered the question more than 14 times. It is more than enough, and I verbally admire them even I do not give additional credit.

I still do not understand some students who did not like to type the answers for their friends’ open-ended questions. This question-and-answer activity was in private Facebook group. Only students in the same class can see it. There is nothing to be shy. I think it is easier than on-site class that students need to answer the question in front of all friends in the class.

What are theories of communication able to explain the phenomenon happened to Amber Heard? Both before and after trial.

Once, I commented on Amber Heard news in a Thai famous official news reports social media account. I typed that I support Amber Heard. I believe her. About 10 people cyber-bullied me for my choice to cheer Amber. I feel bad after got bullied. How about Amber? She got bullied by tons of people. I cannot imagine of how she feels.

Will people feel sorry for what they have done? They might if they did that alone. However, for the case of Amber Heard, people did it as group. Their individual identity got diminished. The reason, the feeling of right or wrong, would fade away. One of my good professors taught me about Deindividuation. People will be more aggressive and have less fear of doing bad things, because they do it as group. One person, like Amber Heard, in this case, will not have ability to stop this number of people.

They judged her by listening to others who can speak so loudly, without looking at the document or using their brain to analyze the information. That is my first assumption. And how about some theory, like Normative Social Influence and Spiral of Silence? What if these people were not really brainwashed, but they have to blame Amber Heard, because of their peers and family?

Lately, you will find that many Amber Heard’s supporting information got released, so public knows more about the fact. However, many people do not change their attitude. Why? Because they do not want to look stupid after expressing their prior opinions against Amber Heard. This is about another communication theory, Confirmation Bias.

Some people may not accept the new information or even it is the fact. Why? That is because of their bias. When they announced to public that they support Mr. X, they will lose confidence if later they have to say they were wrong. This bias is the barrier between these people and the truth. Some people with strong bias would also try to find the new information to strengthen their prior opinion.

For me, it is not a bad thing if someone I know would say they were wrong. That act is bravery. Not a lot of people are able to admit something like this. And I admire the action.

How do students cheat in online-class assignment? Why did they do it? How to grade their work?

According to the COVID outbreak, at-school class cannot be performed. This course in the current semester excluded examination, but using additional activities instead. Therefore, most students got higher grade than students in previous semester. If the students took the exam, it means they need to remember everything they learned in the semester and take a test at the end. However, for the current semester, they were assigned with activities in-and-after classes, it means they can use their knowledge gained from the class immediately. This could be the reason that they can perform in class activities better than in exam.

That was for most students. Most of my students got higher grade comparing to the traditional class with examination, but not for cheating students. I did not grade the dishonest students in the particular assignment(s). They were not allowed to submit the new clean one. They could only get graded from the next one. And if they kept doing this dishonesty over 3 times, their overall grade would be reduced.

It is very easy for students to cheat when they are not at school in front of their teacher. Normally, I gave away 2 types of assignments. One is the in-class activities. Students had limited time and had to submit it in class period. I would give them about 20 minutes until up to an hour. It was very strange to me. This type of assignment consisted of less cheating even all students were in a hurry. Lack of time may cause uncertainty and feeling like being watched.

Another type of activities is that students had a week to finish the assignment. I asked them to write a tutorial of how to process their selected software. Most students selected different software, but if some of them selected the same software, they had to write tutorial of different functions. However, some of them copy tutorials written by someone else online. I did not grade the copied work, and if they asked me about their grade, I would explain them about this reason.

At the end of semester, everyone had to do the screen record and explain how to use their selected software. A few of them still say everything based one the text they copied from someone else. I gave the low grades for these students.

An older professor told me that students may afraid that their work is not good enough, so they copy things from the internet. Earlier, I thought that students with low-prior knowledge might also be low in confidence, so they were dishonest. However, in this semester, in the mentioned assignment, students had a week to write the tutorial by themselves, and had another week to do the screen record. If they made mistake in their first video, they had plenty of time to re-record over and over again. I am happy that many students are honest in this assignment, but I am still confused about the reason behind the dishonest ones. It must not be about their confidence, but it might be their personality trait to perform dishonesty in class work. If anyone know this, please leave some comments below. I want to know and try to fix this in the next course.

Is drinking water related to obesity? Why could this happen to me?

In past decade, I worked as university lecturer and also completed PhD at the same time. Most of the time, I sat and worked hard on a ton of electronic files and tangible paper documents, both from my students, my boss, and my doctoral classes. I had only 2-3 day, half an hour a day of each week to exercise outdoor. I ate 2 meals a day and a lot of unhealthy snacks during sitting in office. Many times, the meal was not the real meal. It was like instant noodle and junk food.

During that decade, my weight was about 52 kilograms or about 115 pounds. One of my past bosses said that I looked older than most people with the same age, and also looked older than older friends. I got angry, not because of I am ageist, but because I worked much harder than all of those he mentioned. They assigned me too much work and too many classes to teach when I was PhD student. Some might be jealous and did not want me to complete this degree.

Finally, after long hard road in that decade, I left those jobs, and now I have more time to write books, blogs, make some videos, creates paintings, and also help suggest some people about statistic. I have about 1 hour a day, everyday of the week, to exercise outdoor. I eat real meal with nutrition, 1-2 meals a day. I eat less snack and drink more water. I drank less than 2 liters a day, and now I drink about 3 liters a day.

My weight is increased so fast. I look fatter and younger. My current weight is 62 kilograms or about 137 pounds. I think I am too heavy because my feet get hurt. So, my question is, can I get fat from drinking more water and being happier?

I have experienced a lot of stupid systems in university and school before. There are a lot of useless document work. Teaching jobs have become less important compared to research, academic affair, and helping university earning more money or even get more new students. Many teachers have no more time to prepare their teaching, because of other responsibility assigned by university. Moreover, they do not have time to both learn and write the book or conduct a research study by themselves in order to heighten their academic position.

I hate when I heard that some people let others wrote the book or research for them, and then, they got promoted to be assist/assoc professors. That is illegal, but no one talked about it because the fear of the evil power within the university. There is too much corruption in universities right now. Who can fix this problem?

What is the evil power?

You know, right? Everyone has once done a mistake. For example, one may come to teach their class 10 minutes late due to heavy traffic; one may miss an important meeting, because one thinks that teaching students are more important when the time is overlapped; one may have low lecturer’s evaluation score in the first semester one signed to do this job. The evil power is the power of the lecturers with high position in university. These people record every single little mistake of the lower-position employees/lecturers. And whenever an honest lecturer knows these evil people’s corruption, they will blackmail one.

In other words, the voiceless will be always voiceless. The corruption will never be disclosed to public, unless the powerful evil lecturers loose their power. This situation is hard to occur. Why? The powerful evil people always promote their companies to have high position in the university, too. They have already prepared someone to hold the power after them. These could be their close friends or their younger brother or their paramour(s). Although the president or dean or other people in board of directors are changed, their power still exists in the next generation. That is why the powerless people are always voiceless, and the corruption is still occurred over and over again.

สมมตินะ ผู้บริหารมหาวิทยาลัยกำหนดว่า การสอบรอบที่ X จะรับนักศึกษาใหม่ จำนวน 70 คน และรอบนั้นสวอิเฎลสมมติให้มีนักเรียนมัธยมปลายมาสมัคร 500 คน โดย 500 คนนี้จะไปสอบปรนัยหรือข้อกาก่อน คนที่ตอบถูกตั้งแต่ 45 ข้อขึ้นไป จะมีสิทธิ์สอบสัมภาษณ์ และครั้งนี้มีนักเรียนที่ได้ 45 คะแนนขึ้นไป จำนวน 300 คน ดังนั้นทั้งหมด 300 คนจะถือแฟ้มสะสมผลงานหรือ Portfolio มาให้อาจารย์ดูพร้อมแนะนำตัว

อาจารย์ผู้สอบสัมภาษณ์อาจมีมากกว่า 1 คน บางมหาวิทยาลัยให้อาจารย์ 3 คนรุมถามนักเรียนคนเดียว ส่วนบางมหาวิทยาลัยก็สัมภาษณ์หนึ่งต่อหนึ่ง สวอิเฎลจะพูดถึงกรณีที่สัมภาษณ์หนึ่งต่อหนึ่ง ซึ่งอาจมีอาจารย์ 5 คน สัมภาษณ์นักเรียนคนละคนกัน แต่ละคนจะไม่รู้ว่าคนอื่น ๆ ระบุว่าให้สอบผ่านสัมภาษณ์ไปแล้วเท่าไร เมื่อสัมภาษณ์เสร็จ และนำจำนวนทั้งหมดที่สอบสัมภาษณ์ผ่านมารวมกัน อาจมีถึง 200 คนจาก 300 คนที่สอบผ่าน และสอบตกเพียง 100 คนเท่านั้น

แต่อย่าลืมว่า การสอบรอบนี้ ผู้บริหารต้องการรับนักศึกษาใหม่เพียง 70 คน และเมื่ออาจารย์ผู้สอบสัมภาษณ์ให้ผ่าน 200 คน มหาวิทยาลัยก็จะมีสูตรที่จะคัด 70 คนที่ดีที่สุดไว้ อาจคัดโดยนำคะแนนสอบปรนัยมาจัดอันดับ หรือนำเกรดเฉลี่ยมาจัดอันดับ แล้วแต่สถาบัน

ดังนั้น คุณอาจเป็นหนึ่งใน 200 คนที่สอบผ่านทั้งปรนัยและสอบผ่านสัมภาษณ์ แต่เมื่อตรวจสอบผลทางเว็บไซต์หรือแอพแล้วพบว่าสอบไม่ติด นั่นอาจไม่ใช่การตัดสินใจของอาจารย์ที่คุณได้คุยด้วย แต่เป็นการตัดสินโดยระบบการคำนวณ

สวอิเฎลเขียนโพสนี้ขึ้นมาเพื่อไม่อยากให้นักศึกษาใหม่ มีความรู้สึกแปลก ๆ กับอาจารย์บางท่าน ที่อาจเคยคิดว่าเขาให้ตนเองสอบตกสัมภาษณ์

นักศึกษาปริญญาตรี โท เอก หลายคนเพิ่งมีโอกาสได้เรียนการวิจัยเชิงปริมาณ การใช้โปรแกรมทางสถิติ SPSS และ Stata เป็นครั้งแรก และอาจารย์ผู้สอนก็มักนำตัวอย่างที่ Sig (หรือ มีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ) มาให้ดู และยังมีตัวอย่างการอภิปรายผล (หรือ Discussion) ที่นำผลที่ Sig ไปเทียบกับผลการวิจัยในอดีต

ครูพราวทำงานวิจัยเชิงปริมาณมาแล้วจำนวนหลายงาน เป็นที่ปรึกษาของนักเรียนหลายกลุ่ม และส่วนใหญ่งานที่เขียนเองจะเป็นภาษาอังกฤษ งานดุษฎีนิพนธ์ก็เป็นเชิงปริมาณเช่นกัน และอยากบอกน้อง ๆ นักศึกษาที่กำลังเรียนอยู่ว่า อย่ากังวลกับผลการวิเคราะห์ที่ไม่ Sig แม้ว่าวิธีการทำให้ Sig มันก็มีอยู่

นักศึกษาหลายคนจิตตก เครียด กังวล เวลา Run อะไรก็ตามแล้วไม่ Sig ไม่ว่าจะเป็น Correlation, Regression, ANOVA, หรือ t-test ครูพราวขอให้คุณเลิกกังวล ถ้าผลออกมาไม่ Sig ก็รายงานในบทที่ 4 หรืออภิปรายในบทที่ 5 ว่า ไม่พบนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ แม้ว่ามันจะไม่เหมือนกับผลการวิจัยในอดีต เราก็สามารถหาเหตุผลที่เป็นไปได้มาอธิบายว่ากลุ่มตัวอย่างหรือ Model ของเราแตกต่างจากงานวิจัยเหล่านั้นอย่างไร และน่าจะไม่ Sig เพราะอะไร

จากประสบการณ์ ที่ครูพราวได้อ่านงานของนักศึกษาบางคน บางคนเข้าใจผิดว่า ไม่ Sig แปลว่ามีความสัมพันธ์เชิงลบ แต่จริง ๆ คำว่า ไม่ Sig คือ ไม่มีความสัมพันธ์อย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ ส่วนเรื่องความสัมพันธ์เชิงลบที่ Sig ก็เป็นไปได้ ถ้ามันอาจขัดกับสมมติฐานของคุณ (ถ้าคุณตั้ง Hypothesis เป็นเชิงบวก) นั่นก็ยิ่งน่าสนใจที่จะเขียนอภิปรายยิ่งขึ้นไปอีก

โดยส่วนตัว ครูพราวก็ชอบเขียนอภิปรายผลการวิจัยที่ไม่คาดคิด ไม่เป็นไปตามสมมติฐาน มันเป็นเรื่องแปลกใหม่ ท้าทาย และมีอิสระในการเขียน มากกว่าที่จะไปเทียบว่าเหมือนงานวิจัยเก่า ๆ งานโน้นงานนี้ และพอเขียนอภิปรายใกล้เสร็จ จะมีย่อหน้าที่จะต้องแนะนำผู้อ่านให้ทำงานวิจัยในอนาคต (Future Study หรือ Suggestion) การที่ผลการวิจัยไม่เป็นไปตามคาด จะทำให้ครูพราวตั้งคำถามได้มากมายในย่อหน้านี้ ว่าคนที่อยากต่อยอดหัวข้อเดียวกันควรลองใส่ตัวแปรอะไรเพิ่ม หรือตัดตัวแปรอะไรออก หรือควรเลือกกลุ่มตัวอย่างด้วยวิธีอื่น

เห็นหรือยัง? ว่าเมื่อผลการวิเคราะห์ในงานวิจัย ไม่ Sig มีข้อดีและน่าสนุกในการเขียนขนาดไหน อย่าไปยึดติดว่าจะต้อง Sig แล้วจะดี หรือมีครูบางคนที่เขาอาจสอนคุณแบบผิด ๆ ว่า ถ้าไม่ Sig จะห้ามเขียนวิพากษ์วิจารณ์ทุกกรณีในบทที่ 5

เป็นนักศึกษาควรซื่อสัตย์ รายงานผลการวิจัยให้ตรงตามตัวเลขที่เห็นจริง ๆ ทำงานวิจัยด้วยตนเอง ไม่คัดลอกคนอื่น แม้จะมีวิธีโกงแบบใช้สถิติ แบบนี้ที่ครูพราวเคยเขียนไว้ว่าทำผลที่ไม่ Sig ให้กลายเป็น Sig ได้อย่างไร และมีคนที่เคยรู้จักบางคนที่โกงอย่างหน้าด้าน ไร้ยางอาย คือ เก็บข้อมูลมา 50 คน แต่เอาไป copy เป็น 4 เท่า จนได้ 200 คน เพื่อให้กลุ่มตัวอย่างมีจำนวนเยอะและให้ Sig ง่ายขึ้น คนประเภทนี้มาขอให้เราช่วยเรื่องสถิติ เราตอบไปว่า จงไปทำให้ถูกต้องก่อน เก็บข้อมูลจากคนจริง ๆ ก่อน แล้วค่อยมาคุยกันใหม่

ความเชื่อผิด ๆ อีกเรื่องที่ครูพราวรู้มาด้วยตนเอง คือ ครูบางคนจะเชื่อว่า งานวิจัยจะได้ตีพิมพ์ก็ต่อเมื่อ Sig ไปทั่วทั้ง Model หรือ Sig ทุก ๆ สมมติฐาน ซึ่งครูพราวพบว่านั่นไม่ใช่เรื่องจริง ถ้าเรามี 5 สมมติฐาน และ Sig 1-2 สมมติฐานก็เป็นเรื่องปกติ ไม่มีปัญหาเรื่องตีพิมพ์ ถ้ายิ่งเป็นประชุมวิชาการ หากไม่เจอ Sig เลยก็สามารถขึ้นนำเสนอได้ ขอเพียงมีระเบียบวิธีการวิจัยถูกต้อง รายงานผลถูกต้อง เขียนบทนำและอภิปรายผลได้มีเหตุผลอ่านสนุก อ้างอิงงานที่ทันสมัย

จากที่เคยตรวจงานวิจัยทั้งในการประชุมวิชาการและวารสาร ทั้งภาษาไทยและอังกฤษ ครูพราวก็ใช้หลักการเดียวกัน คือ นักวิจัยควรรายงานให้ตรงตามผลการวิเคราะห์ ถ้าไม่ Sig ก็ไม่เป็นไร บางงานที่เคยตรวจ เจอว่า Sig ไปทุกสมมติฐานเพราะมีกลุ่มตัวอย่างหลายพันคน แบบนี้ก็ Type I Error ชัด ๆ เราก็จะเขียนแนะนำนักวิจัยให้ดูค่า r, R, Beta, t, หรือ F (แทนการดูค่า p) ถ้า r หรือ Beta น้อยกว่า 0.1 ก็จะแนะว่า อย่าเอามาสรุปว่า Sig เลย แต่ควรเขียนอภิปรายว่าเหตุใดจึงแทบไม่พบความสัมพันธ์
