I am afraid of the dark power. The power that makes me uncertain. The power that I do not know. I have seen its effect on others before. It was too much for me to be in the game. I know only I am now playing with fire.

The policy of my university was that each core course should have its own book or publication for the students to read. Therefore, almost all of the lecturers were invited to write one or more chapters. I wrote a chapter of the book for the course, Art for Communication. It is the chapter 10.

After that, a senior lecturer made his own version of this book. He copied a part of my work (about 4 pages with his font setting). Although he gave (wrong) citations, almost all of the content in that part is plagiarism. Later, I knew from him that he sent the particular book to apply to be an assistant professor. This should not have happened. The plagiarism should not have been in that book.

I asked him to take his book back from the process, and resend it again without plagiarism. He told me that he could not do it. He believes that it is not a wrong thing to exactly copy others’ work as long as he cites them in the reference part. In fact, paraphrasing is needed. We all could not copy anything more than 3 lines, even we cite it. If the literature is more than three lines, we have to format it with a big indent and italic font format.

I tried to tell him that he did not do it correctly, and he should have retrieved his book back before the committees saw it. However, he said that it was normal to copy others’ work this way. I am disappointed, and I am afraid that he would let his book go through the process.

I am just a small young university lecturer. I think I may get a big problem now, after I claim my right and justice. There might be some power that I could not see, but it might hurt me after this.

If I did not do a right thing as what I have done, I would not forgive myself for the whole life. However, when I do the right thing and look for the justice, I become afraid of the power of someone with a higher position in my university.

I write this today, in case, there might be something happen to me. Then, we all know it. Thank you everyone that spent your time listening to my anxiety.

I am a teacher or you could call me a university lecturer. I live in Thailand. That’s my country. I generally teach art and design class and sometimes they assign me to teach English related to media production or research. In my office, some of my friends, who are also teachers, often say bad things about their students. I think it is okay to discuss about the students of their problems, so we could help one another solve such the problem.

However, one of my friends does not do it this way. Let me name this guy, Tony. I don’t want to stereotype based on the race or genders, so please imagine that Tony’s gender is n/a. Tony always rails one’s students. Tony said that almost all of his/her students are irresponsible, rude, and lazy. I don’t believe him/her. I told him, like, you know that some of your students are bad, because there must be the good ones, and that made you able to recognize who is worse then who. Then, Tony said that less-than-10-percent of the students were good. However, I think that is impossible.

Days later, again, Tony start to said bad things about other teachers or lecturers. He said he is the only one who is reasonable, while others were too emotional and aggressive. Based on all these things, I think I found that this guy is too pessimistic. I tried to pull him up to see the world as other friends, but he refused. The pessimistic people may not be able to harm others, but once, they start to said bad things around, that is very dangerous. As we all understand the media effect. When we are with the friend who repeatedly say bad things, our attitude might be changed, too.

Asia Patriarchal Films and Thailand Floating Market

Asia Patriarchal Films and Thailand Floating Market

Thailand floating markets and gender discrimination gender norm patriarchy stereotype prejudice equality southern and the sea

Asia movies are generally more patriarchal that current American movies, especially crime and superhero TV show. I prefer those created by Warner Bros. I did not say that Warner Bros.’ are patriarchiless, but it is quite less than Asian ones.

MONO29, a digital TV channel in Thailand, has imported a lot of media produced by Warner Bros. and others American companies. This provides Thai people a great opportunity to consume the media or movie with less patriarchy. I often watch the shows and films in MONO29 because they do not fight against my identity.

Thailand Riverside Markets and Floating Markets Near Bangkok Tour มะกะโท พาพระธิดาพระร่วง หนีไปเมาะตะมะ Traditional female women role gender norm in ancient Thailand

It is important to note that the time that I am writing this blog, now, MONO29 schedule is full of American films and American TV series. There are only few Chinese or Hong Kong movies. I could see Korea films only twice a year. There is no Korean or Chinese drama serials in their program. I do not know if they would change their policy in the future. I just noted this current fact, because it is a part of the point that I want to make now.

Yesterday, the news reported that MONO29 was ranked as the second most viewed TV channel in Thailand. I asked myself, if I should be happy with that. Most Thai students were taught to be nationalist rather than patriotic. Every Thai and also me would have this soul inside. I feel like, why I and other people should watch MONO29, not another TV channel with full of Thai media. I admit that every time I see Thai movies, I got mad with their extremely patriarchy. I do not know if other Thai audiences would feel the same way.

Thailand Riverside Markets and Floating Markets Near Bangkok Tour วัดเสาธงหิน นนทบุรี Sao Thong Hin

I think about the audience of MONO29. I want to know the effect after these audiences experience American films in MONO29 and then, they had to see Thai movies. What would they feel or will they recognize the different level of patriarchy? If they could recognize it, then, I would conclude that even they do not support Thai media producers, they could learn an important thing from foreign media, which is gender equality. However, I am afraid that they would not learn anything at all.

In other words, I like how Thai people prefer to see Thai movie, but I will like it better if they prefer to watch media without patriarchy, even those media were not created in Thailand. On the other hand, I will not like to see people who love foreign media, just because they were made by foreign producers, not because there is lack of patriarchy.

Thailand Riverside Markets and Floating Markets Near Bangkok Tour ตะละแม่ท้าว หลบอีกาตัวใหญ่ passive women in Thai traditional literature

Because almost all of the films and TV series in MONO29 were American, Thai audiences may not learn that Thai society needs gender equality and racial equality, too. They may perceive that only American women are active and subjective, not Thai women. Sometimes, MONO29 had Asia movies in its schedule. Korean movie made the image of Asia women worst. Female characters in Korean media are not only very passive and brainless, but they also waited for men to save them from violence.

I do not want MONO29 fans to see all Asia women like the idiots and praise only American women as active shero. I want them to see the gender equality in the films as a whole. I am afraid that they would separately judge women by races.

Thailand Riverside Markets and Floating Markets Near Bangkok Tour โบสถงาม ด้วยความสงบ วัดป่าประดู่ จังหวัด ระยอง

Every time, I and my family come to floating or riverside market in Thailand, I could see gender and racial equality. I dream to see people learn about the equality from real world rather than from patriarchal media. They do not need to wait any media producers to create a good film for them to learn about the equality. Thai people mainly consist of two races, Thai-Thai people with mostly dark skin and Thai-Chinese people with more white skin. Thai-Chinese people are stereotyped as richer and more educated. Right now, it is worse than before when Korean popular culture has washed some Thai adolescents’ brains. Korean pop stars look (much) like Thai-Chinese people. The too-positive prejudice toward Thai-Chinese people creates a big gap between both races.

With this expected difference or prejudice, it does not hurt any part of society in floating market. Both races could be both hawkers and tourists. I like what I see there. I want to see the society like this in other places, too.

Floating Market in Thailand and the Solution about Sexism and Racism

Floating Market in Thailand and the Solution about Sexism and Racism

When I was in New York City, I found that there were many campaigns and also the exhibitions in museum established to empower women and people with colors and LGBT identities. I grew up in different world, and I began to learn about the gender and racial identity there. Years later, I continued my doctoral degree with Bangkok University in Thailand. My advisor made my vision clearer than before. I could understand more about gender/racial/age equality. Even New York City consisted of these campaigns, years ago, that does not mean all Americans would accept or prefer the equality. In public place, they express their respect toward one another, but in online space, it is very different. I could see many racist American and racist media fans in online space. When people do not need to protect their face(s) or their true identities, they would express their evil thought easily.

Thailand flosting markets and gender discrimination gender norm patriarchy stereotype prejudice equality วัดราษฎร์ประคองธรรม นนทบุรี

Sometimes, I went through Google movie review, since it is one of the most reliable reviews compared with IMDb or Rotten Tomatoes. Many feminist movies got lower rate than general movie, even these feminist movies have a certain production and enjoyable plot. These users do the same thing with anti-racist films. Some moment, I am depressed, because I learn that there are too many sexist, racist, and ageist people online. I have to remind myself to make myself feel better. I talked to myself, these people can only so active online, because if they express their sexism and racism in real world, then, there is no place for them to stand in the society. That is the encouragement that I use to say.

Floating market is the place that could encourage me the same way. Floating market or riverside markets in Thailand provide me the fact that people with any identity could live together peacefully. The tourists travel from several places and come to have a walk and have a meal here. The hawkers could be either men or women, and either young or old. I love when I see people with different identities do the similar things and communicate to one another nicely and friendly. This is why I really like to travel to floating markets all around Thailand.

Thailand Floating Market, Poverty in Joker and The Hunger Games

cite this article: Arunrangsiwed, P. (2020). Thailand Floating Market, Poverty in Joker and The Hunger Games. Retrieved from https://sw-eden.net/2020/01/01/thailand-poverty-joker-hunger-games/

Thailand Floating Market, Poverty in Joker and The Hunger Games

I could see a big different between the image of poverty in two famous movies, Joker (2019) and The Hunger Games (film series) (The Hunger Games (2012), The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013),The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 (2014), and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 (2015)). The Hunger Games portrayed people with poverty as nice guys or hero, while Joker (2019) portrayed them as villain, drugsters, violent activists, and crimes. These movies tried to stereotype the rich and the poor, but in different ways.

Thailand Riverside Markets and Floating Markets Near Bangkok Tour Batman vs. Joker กระซิบรัก เมืองน่าน วัดภูมินทร์

The case of Red-Shirt protestors in Thailand could be the important examples interplayed with these stereotypes. If I wrote this as I am a scholar, I would explain this with social identity theory, that people view in-group and out-group differently. Middle class people in Thailand would view themselves as the middle-class and upper-class in Joker movie (2019). while working-class people view themselves as the poor in The Hunger Games. In other words, middle-class people view Red-Shirt protestors as the poor in Joker movie, while Red-Shirt protestors see the middle-class as the rich in The Hunger Games.

Thailand Riverside Markets and Floating Markets Near Bangkok Tour พระมาดูงานด้วย ที่ตำบลนครป่าหมาก

Both films are extremely in stereotypes, and there is nothing in the middle. Like, The Hunger Games should have portrayed both positive side and negative side of either rich or poor people. In Joker movie as well, it should not be all poor people prefer the violent actions against the hegemony. Without high education, it does not mean that all people would love to engage violent actions. In real-world context, there are so many peaceful working-class or lower-class people, and similarly, there are so many prosocial and responsible middle-class people.

I am afraid that media audiences would both learn the stereotypes and learn to stereotype others as the movies teach them. In social sciences and media studies, they found that if ones like the media, have parasocial interaction with the environment in fictional media, and identify with media characters, they would easily be influenced from media in many aspects, their traits, attitudes, and behaviors.

Traveling to Thailand floating market might be able to help solve these stereotype problems. In a period of time, Red-Shirt protestors hate middle-class people a lot, and in the current days, there are also the fights in social network. Floating market is where people from many social classes and many economic statuses come together and move a small economic system for local people. Middle-class and working-class could be both hawkers and tourists. Because it is the floating market(s), it is easy for all kinds of people to get into, unlike the luxurious shopping mall that poor people do not want to show up or adapt their routine to fit into.

How Thailand Floating Markets Help Solve Gender Discrimination

cite this article: Arunrangsiwed, P. (2020). How Thailand Floating Markets Help Solve Gender Discrimination. Retrieved from https://sw-eden.net/2020/01/01/thailand-floating-markets-gender-discrimination/

How Thailand Floating Markets Help Solve Gender Discrimination

Gender discrimination and inequality among Thai people are reinforced by Thai entertainment media, that everyone consumes. Thai soap opera TV serials are mostly produced in patriarchy theme. Many female characters would do everything to marry rich men. Most of these female fictional characters are not employed, or employed in low-position in company, while male ones have much-better job position. In fact, this kind of media is the liar regarding actual Thai society and economy. This kind of media have only been produced to serve the existing Thai patriarchal people, and there are still a lot of them, today.

Thailand Riverside Markets and Floating Markets Near Bangkok Tour female women folks family local people

People without media literacy skills and unconsciousness would believe it easily. Sometimes, I could not say that this kind of media serves the need to patriarchal people, but it generates the patriarchal idea into young people without such the attitude. Some women, in real-world context, also discriminate against other women in the same way as they learn from Thai soap opera. It is not just the issue about sexism, but it is also about gendered ageism.

Thailand Riverside Markets and Floating Markets Near Bangkok Tour นครปฐม

Floating markets are something different from Thai soap opera. People, who work there, as the stereotype, might be people without high education and we could call them, working class. Most hawkers are female who could work by themselves, sexual independently apart from men. I have talked to some of these female hawkers, and they said that they had been married, but later they divorced. They made the decision to be by their own, because their men took almost all of their money and wasted it. They said that the only way to have enough money to raise their babies or children is to divorce.

The problem seen from this issue is that how these female hawkers can learn the truth about their ex-husband after the marriage. I did not say that all men in Thailand were really bad or irresponsible, but women should understand that not all of them are so nice and should not dream to marry as fast as they could, as they saw in Thai soap opera. They should learn about their boyfriends before making a decision to marry or at least before planning to have a child. The reason that they rarely see how their men are might be because they consume too much patriarchal media.

If someone could run a weird experimental research study, s/he should compare people who grew up in floating market (without watching Thai or Korean TV serials) and those who heavily consume Thai or Korean TV serials. This might could impossible, but it might prove something about people’s belief and attitude, reinforced by real world and by patriarchal pop-culture.

Riverside Markets could Represent the Most Part of Thailand

Riverside Markets could Represent the Most Part of Thailand

Every time, I watch Hollywood films that shot some footage in Thailand, I found that those directors or filming location managers like to go to dirty places, such as slum and pub. They always include prostitute as a part of some scenes. I really hate to see that and I think that other educated Thai people who know their own country very well would also hate that.

The question popped up in my head is why they did not shoot their films in regular places representing Thailand. In my everyday life, I experience much-better places than those places in American films. I normally go to university, public library, shopping mall, and especially floating markets or riverside markets.

floating riverside market Thailand วัดท้องคุ้ง พระประแดง

In this journal, I would like to talk about floating markets and riverside markets in Thailand. These places could represent Thailand very well. I think it is million times more representative for Thailand than those slums and pubs in American films.

Floating markets and riverside markets are very great places to visit. People could spend 1 to 3 hours there. They could walk around, take photos, and enjoy their lunch. Foreigners could learn Thai life in here. It mixes between the traditional one and the adapted one. Rare foods and snacks are sold here. It is a good idea for foreigners or tourists to eat something else rather than Pad Thai. There are various foods waiting for you to try.

Moreover, people could enjoy feeding swai fish. It is a kind of cat fish that people around the world usually eat. Swai fish in Thailand is slightly different. I do not like to eat it that much. It skin is oily and thick. However, if you like sort of thing, you may love swai fish, too.

Thailand Floating or Riverside Markets and Suicidal Thought

Thailand Floating or Riverside Markets and Suicidal Thought

I really hate to have an argument with anyone in my family, but sometimes I have to, because I need a better tomorrow. Something needs to be talked about, since existing problems have to be solved. It is hurt a lot when I have to drive my emotion during the argument. Many times, I want to commit suicide. I cry from inside, but I have to remind myself the reason to be alive. There are so many things waiting for me to do.

floating riverside market Thailand ท่าเตียน ตึกเก่า hand made toy Thailand

My friends or co-workers in my office found that I am a successful teacher who graduated a doctoral degree and got promoted to be an assistant professor at the age 31. They said that it is very fast and many people could not do it. For me, I want to be a novelist writing a story about my favorite king. I want to make it a feminist fantasy fiction. I want Thailand, my hometown, to have this kind of fiction. Teacher work makes me too busy to have a long-continuous time to reach my dream or my wish. Floating market or riverside market might be the short-term solution for it.

Floating markets and riverside markets in Thailand are the nice place to have some rest and to forget about everyday routine. Even I sometimes have argument with my family members, but when we come to floating market or riverside market together, the bad things seem to fade away. I really like the moment that I and my family enjoy the walk and foods at floating market. These places make me and my beloved family happy. We always smile there. I could find my happiness at least in a short period before getting back to work again.

Alex Garcia Mayday Parade Emo Emotion

The point is that my work is not related to my dream about being the novelist at all. My dream seems to be far away when I learn that today kids do not like to read a book, even it is a novel or fun fan fiction. However, I plan to make it anyway, if I have a chance. I hope for the best, I hope for the chance. I am waiting for an opportunity to leave my organization or have a leave-without-paid period.

Every time that I think about my identity conflict or the serious argument in my family, I would bring them to some floating markets or riverside markets. This helps us pass through the hard day. Once a week might be too short or not enough. I will never let it go. I will make it longer and better. I am going to do a project to promote some non-famous floating markets in Thailand. If they could survive, I will also survive. There might be many people with similar problem as well as me, and I think floating markets are helping them, too.

Method of my Floating Market Research Studies

cite this article: Arunrangsiwed, P. (2019). Method of my Floating Market Research Studies. Retrieved from https://sw-eden.net/2019/12/31/method-floating-market-research/

Method

The current research study is overlapping between one-group-post-test quasi-experimental research study and academic service that I would like to contribute to floating markets or riverside markets in Bangkok, Nakornpratom and Nonthaburi.

Samples/Participants:

The researcher expected to collect the data from 30 hawkers who own shops in floating markets or riverside markets. The researcher would collect the data from 1-3 markets depending on the collaboration of each hawkers and folk leaders in market(s).

floating riverside market Thailand ตลาดน้ำคลองบางหลวง

Procedure:

The researcher and assistant need to talk to the folk leaders to ask for the permission to run the research project in their floating markets. In fact, all hawkers have their own right to participate the study, but we need to talk to the folk leaders because it is the code of practice for local people in this area.

After we got the permission, we asked each hawker, if s/he needed to participate. We explained about the data that they needed to provide and the benefit that they would have after the participation.

The options that they may choose are:
(1) let the researcher pin their shop into Google Maps,
(2) let the researcher create the English-version menu for their food shop, and
(3) let the researcher create an online blog page about their shop, and they could also request for the qr-code to access such the blog post. They could easily show the qr-code to others to access the page, too.

Each hawker could select all options or they could also select only one option that they prefer best.

After we finish their requests, we could ask them about their satisfaction and their intention to use the given service or products. For example, the researcher could ask, “how much intention do you have to use the English menu to sell the food to foreigners?”, or “do you think that having a pinning shop in Google Maps could benefit your food store?”

floating riverside market Thailand วัดนาคปรก

Instruments:

The current study use questionnaire and paper (for field note) as the major tool for the data collection. Before that part of data collection, in order to finish the request(s), the researcher needed to use phone, tablet, and personal computer. These tools are for pinning the shop(s) into Google Maps, designing and printing the English-version menu, and to create blog post(s).

Data Analysis:

The result would be presented with descriptive statistic, and the part of communication between the researchers and the hawkers is also reported as the narrative format.

Thai People’s Rudeness in Riverside Market, Thailand

Thai People’s Rudeness in Riverside Market, Thailand

I have read many comments created in online space by foreign tourists who visited Thailand. Although I do not have a perfect English, I could understand that many talk about negative experience regarding Thai people‘s rudeness. I am not happy then, because I am also Thai and I think we are politer that what foreigners believed.

When I was in New York City and I had to buy Thai food from China Town, I experience a similar thing, Chinese people’s rudeness. Those days, I felt that Chinese people in china Town were so mean to me. In fact, they were nice toward other Chinese people. The only communication failure is that they could not speak English and they tried to shout out to make me understand them.

floating riverside market Thailand ร้อยเอ็ด-บึงพลาญชัย

Every time that I go to floating markets or riverside markets in Thailand, hawkers and the visitors are generally nice and polite to me. However, many of them could not communicate to each other be using the same language. Hawkers could not speak English or Chinese, while the foreigners could not speak Thai. Then, the foreign tourists would perceive their unintended rudeness. Some avoid talking to foreigners and walk away. They are not rude, but they are just afraid of the communication.

I saw what happen with my own eyes. I saw the problem when the foreigners wanted to buy some food at floating market, and then, they left, because of the communication failure. I and my mother walked to talk with the folk leader and the floating market manager. We told them that if we got some fund from my university, I would make English food menus for every shop in floating market. The folk leader agreed with our project.

floating riverside market Thailand กาฬสินธุ์-วัดพุทธาวาส หรือวัดภูสิงห์

To get some fund from the university, I had to wait for half a year. Weeks later, I went to the particular floating market again. I found that they did not wait for the fund or project I told them. I, a kind of, wow! Most hawkers who sold foods made the multi-language menus by themselves and put them in front of the shops. I feel very happy that they took my idea and took the action very fast. I did not need to do the project for them anymore. I still requested the fund for the same project, but I will make this thing for other floating market or riverside markets that do not have the English menus or pinned places in Google maps yet.

I hope my idea and what I am doing now would solve the communication problem between foreign tourists and Thai hawkers. I wish to see less comment complaining about Thai people’s rudeness. I want the foreigners to know the truth inside our warm heart.
