How much does a college advisor make in Thailand?

Cite this journal as: Eden, S. W. (2018). How much does a college advisor make in Thailand? Retrieved from http://sw-eden.net

I work in a public university in Thailand. Most of the teachers in our school have to be the advisor of a couple classes of students. A class consists of about 50 students. I know from my friend that these teachers are paid once a semester. I am not in that system, but I just want to share what my friend told me.

My friend is a lecture in a management program. She is an advisor of students in the weekend program. Another teacher in the same program is the advisor of the students in the evening class of weekday program.

I think this may confuse you, if you are from other countries, like the US, Australia, or some from Europe. In Thailand, many universities separate the students by their time that they come to class. In my school, there are 3 of them. First are those who have to study during the day time of Monday to Friday. Second are those who have to study in the evening of Monday to Friday. Third are those who study in Saturday and Sunday.

Figure 1: Make it in Thailand

Teachers who are the advisors of students in the evening of Monday to Friday will be paid about 60 to 90 USD per a semester. However, those who are the advisor of Saturday and Sunday classes, will be paid only 60 cents per a student per a semester. My friend told me that she got paid only 7 USD per a semester, because her class consists of 12 students.

She feels that the wages are not fair for those who gave to come to school during weekend. I do not know much about this issue, but I think it is good that I am not in this system. I am the advisor of those who are in the day class of weekday. I do not get paid, since my salary covers all the day time.

Get someone else to write your research papers?

Cite this journal as: Eden, S. W. (2018). Get someone else to write your research papers? Retrieved from http://sw-eden.net

I am a very ordinary teacher in a school/program in a large university in Thailand. I also know other teachers from other university. Everyone with this kind of job, the university teachers or lecturers, will have to upgrade themselves to be assistant professor, associate professor, and professor, respectively. Therefore, we read the rule written by the government, about what kind of papers or academic works that we have to submit for the committee to judge or promote us.

The rules say that the academic works could be the research paper or academic paper that got publish in the conference proceedings and journals. They could be the creative work, such as movies or games that have published academic paper supporting them. People I know from other universities walk follow this rules. They could submit their research paper published in conference proceeding to the committee to consider.

However, my university creates their own rule for some reason. They do not allow me and other employees to submit the conference papers, but only papers published in the journals. This makes our life harder than other people in other university.

In fact, there was an Easter egg hidden in this policy.

she the president
Figure 1: research the search from ocean

Some friends told me that many employees bought the research papers with the money about 400-500 USD per a paper. In other words, they hired someone else to write it for them. They did not actually know anything about the paper or even the topic of the paper. After they bought the paper, they submit it to the conference in order to travel around many countries outside Thailand.

Because the president of my university discovered this Easter egg, she believes that most conference papers are not written by the authors appeared on them. This might be the reason that she does not allow anyone to use conference papers to send to the committees in order to be promoted to be an assistant professor, and also other levels.

I do not like the way she thinks though. I have written all conference papers by myself. I have never hired anyone to do it for me, but I lose the chance to use them to submit to the committees and being promote. I am both angry and depress. The president makes the world unfair. Why doesn’t she just get rid of the cheating people who buy the academic work? If she could do it, the honest ones will be able to use their conference papers to get into the higher job position.

Got an F or Fail from major courses, What can I do?

S. W. Eden

Cite this journal as: Eden, S. W. (2018). Got an F or Fail from major courses, What can I do? Retrieved from http://sw-eden.net

I am a university lecturer. I know that I should be very serious and all the students should be serious about their education, too. When I was an undergraduate student, about 10 years ago, some friends got an F and I have got a couple of F, too. Although I had never had an absent and I submitted all the class assignment in those two classes, I still got F because I fail in the final exam.

Today, I have been a university lecturer for 6 years, in Thailand. Now is the time that all universities have to think about their future, regarding the decreased number of new students. I think the university would need to consider about the “give an F” policy. They may not like the teachers to give the F to the students, because that reduces students’ satisfaction. Students may quit the university if they found they get many Fs.

The topic that I would like to discuss here is that, should I give an F to a very bad student? Bad students are those who often have absent. In the whole semester, they came to class only 2-3 times. Some did not come to take an exam, but they asked their parents to write the letter to ask me to allow their sons to take the exam after the examination date.

teacher and funny student
Figure 1: Teacher and funny student cartoon drawing

Almost all of these bad students do not submit any assignment, and they often said that they had other work to do to earn the money to help their family. I do not know if it is real or not, but I think, if it is real, they should drop and register for the class again when they have more free time.

Some professors in my university give these bad students the F, but some do not. Let’s talk about those who do not give the F for very bad students. We should be curious about what they actually think.

I have talk to one of them. He told me that if the students are very bad, he should allow them to keep being in the school until they graduate. This is because if no one gives an opportunity for these bad students, they would leave the school and do some illegal job in the future. On the other hand, if they are bad students who graduate, they will automatically find the job that most people look for. This way will help the society as a whole.

However, I still think that this thought is not entirely right. It might be right, but it does not fair for all other students who try very hard to graduate.

Last semester, I allowed a very bad student to pass my class with the grade D-. In fact, he should get an F, because he came to class only 2 times. Then, he took the exam. The total score he got was 30 from 100. I feel really bad about what I have done. I should not let him pass.

You guys… Do you want to say something about this issue. If I engage in this kind of situation again, what should I do?

Plagiarism in School Assignment in Thailand, How should I work with it?

Proud Arunrangsiwed

This is Proud Arunrangsiwed. I am a Thai university lecturer. The time that I write this post is November, 2018. I do not have much time to write my blogs recently. Most of the time of mine has been devoted for my students and research studies. Although my university needs a ton of research papers to improve its university ranking, but I cannot just sit and write my papers without taking care of my students. I have spent many hours a week to work with my students’ thesis and the correct their assignment. I might not one of a few lecturers that assign the individual projects and homework for the students to do. We all know that to assign individual projects, teachers have to spent a large amount of time on reviewing, talking, and correcting students’ work. I could do it. I mean, I will do it, because I feel that it is a right thing to do so. I think the students will be benefited by working in their individual project better than the group work.

I have noticed many other university lecturers. Many of them assigned the group work, and most of these works are about to write a whole book to report some project. Like, the whole semester, each group of students have to submit only one assignment, which is this thick book. These lecturers would grade the students based on only this book, class attendance, and the exams. There are no other homework assignments. Some said that these teachers are lazy. However, I would rather say that I am too diligent.

Let’s talk about the big-book assignment that most teachers ask most students to complete it at the end of the semester. Almost all of these books contained too much copyright infringement. Undergraduate students are likely to copy the contents from any website that they could find the related information regarding their topics. I am too tired to see this kind of students’ work.

First, I feel like they do not show the respect toward their teachers, because they think that their teachers are stupid and do not know that they copy the work of someone else.

Second, I feel like these students are brainless, because they could not create any work by themselves. I think it is a good thing to look around many information in the internet, but they should read and write them in their own words, not just copy and paste.

Third, I think it is not fair for other students who create the work by themselves. I guess that some teachers may not know how to check the plagiarism without using Turn-it-in. The grading will not be fair for the students who work very hard, compared to those who just copy and paste things from the internet.

Classroom in Thailand, and Thai people
Figure 1: Thai classroom

One of my friends who is the teacher in the school of management told me something about her students. She told me that she tried to blame and teach the students who like to copy and paste online information to put in their project book. You know what? Her students said that she (the teacher) was stupid because she did know the benefit of the internet where was the place for students to copy the text. This is a kind of panic, I think. I do not understand why her students think this way.

Once, I discover the fact that some other teachers also teach their students to copy things around the internet. I have been in a communication or media art program. In some class, the students need to go outside to take the photos and shoot the videos. However, one of my friend in the same school encouraged his students to copy any pictures and videos from websites and paste in their work.

I think, the educational institutes should do something with this kind of teachers. They should have a seminar or workshop or intervention to teach them to be a better teacher. Moreover the university and high school should have more strict rules to punish students who do the copyright infringement and plagiarism.

Green Architecture Design

5 years ago, I walk into the field of architecture with my best skill of artist and my proud knowledge from Mahidol Wittayanusorn school of science. I did not expect anything from this field, but I thought that architecture should have been the easiest way to graduate. Not so long time ago, my meaning of “Architecture” was changed. I saw many under-constructional areas around my village. Those places had been farm before, but then, they were just the surface of concrete and concrete housing.

Thailand is considered as a perfect country which its land can grow almost kinds of agricultural plants, and has a vast area of forest. King Bhumibol Adulyadej has kept teaching people to head to develop agriculture instead of industrial. Thailand is already good at agriculture, but Thai people just need to make it better and greater. Only less number of capitalists can hear what the King says. They have changed green lands to be nongreen buildings to make a lot of money. My family has been one of foolish people who stepped into their traps. 1997, when I was 10 years old, my family moved to their housing, which built on top of a lotus farm. Many city people love to move out from the crowd areas into suburban housing. They escape from traffic-jam streets and high-pollution air. Most of them have to have their own cars to use in rush hour to go to work in the city. They waste the gas/benzine and also waste the material to make the cars.

The happy life with fresh air could not stay with the city people in suburban so long. When the capitalists invested in malls or supermarkets around those housings, the peaceful areas became the expanded city. The air and noise pollution came into the place. The time to move has come again then. The green areas have been destroyed very fast around many cities in Thailand, such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Songkla. Most capitalists do not do a green design, because they just want to pay less. They put a beautiful picture of house with a big grass field on the advertising board. We call those boards, “Air Junk”, because they hide all scenery and wind. People pay for those advertising housing projects before seeing the real houses. Most of real-estate projects in Thailand, people need to pay for every step to build a house, not pay for a finished house. The results that they get are small green areas, because most of green areas are cut to be the main circulation of the project, and that is made by concrete.

The expansion of the city may be a good economic sign in the business term or for the government, but in fact, it is a sign of disaster for environment and for an agriculture country as Thailand. The houses, buildings and factory keep releasing heat and toxic into the natural resources. They do not only hurt the nature by themselves, but they are also harmful for the agriculture areas around. Thai Government announced that rain of all province was not drinkable, because it contained very toxic substance. Although the toxic makers are in the city, the toxic can spread around many places, covering the tropical jungle area in Nakornsritummarach, the north east of Thailand.

Cathleen McGuigan wrote on NewWeek.com under a topic of “The Bad News About Green Architecture” about the unpleasantness in the design of green building. She described that the green buildings work so good by themselves, but people still have to drive to work. In my opinion, moral is more important than an object. One Bryant Park has a system of recapturing rainwater which is good, but many people who do not pay for the water bill will never think about saving the water. For example, many women always turn on the tap when they are doing their hair in public restrooms, and many men liked to do that when they are shaving. I have visited a company that my parent worked with, and I saw the janitor turn on all taps in the restroom at the same time to clean an individual sink. Moreover, he spilled some detergent on the restroom floor, and he used whole roll of paper towel to absorb it, then he threw that roll away. Paper is made by the trees. If only people waste and kind of material, that is the way they waste the energy, because all manufacture processes have to use the energy. This mean many people cannot change their attitude, if the results do not impact them directly. If we can change their habits, the world will be able to save the energy by this method more than the green design many times.

Want to pee again, photo by Sw Eden on Flickr

Not only the gray water system that One Bryant Park has, it also has air-condition ventilator on the floor. Most of buildings in the world have air-condition on the ceiling, which is far from human living space. What One Bryant Park does should be so good during the winter, because people love to feel hotter at their feet and feel colder at their heads.

Green design is enjoyable as people love to hang out in the park. People like the sun rather than a electric bulb. I always cheer the green design, but we have to accept that there is no building in the world can be 100% green. Although the big window can save the electricity used in bulb, the building also lose its heat in the winder through the window about 30 times bigger than the wall. If the office loves to use air-condition so much, the big window can also heat the interior up as the system of greenhouse effect. The better way to save the energy during the summer is using fans and open windows instead of air-condition, but it is still the problem for the offices in the high pollution areas.

Narita Airport Facade, photo by Sw Eden on Flickr

One of the towers of K Bank (Kasikorn) in Thailand uses a special kind of glass for their facade. Its glass does not create greenhouse effect as other towers do. The color of its glasses seems white and can reflect the light very well. It is not dark color that will absorb the heat into the glass itself. Considering about the north pole, Greenland and the south pole, they are not only the cold place to keep the world cold, but they are also big white areas to reflect the heat out from the world. I tried to say that the colors of facade and rooftop are very important, too.

I went to Japan accidentally when the flight to USA was delayed. Narita Airport sent Thai people into its hotel for one night. It was winter at that time. We could not make a far trip, because we did not have Japanese visas. I walked to see its swimming pool. It was surprising me that it was covered by half-sphere glasses, and the water was one of the glass’ layers. The temperature was quite fine. The water can act better than the gas or air space actually. If you are a Bible reader and you can remember the Great Flood (Noah’s Ark), the water was from the sky and that means the planet earth had been surrounded by the water. The water can prevent many kinds of rays from the universe and the sun, and it acts very well in this Japanese swimming pool. The Bible also shows that after the Great Flood, humans’ ages were reduces from 800 to be less than 100 years old. Humans’ genes began to have mistake, because the water-atmosphere was destroyed. Brother and sister could not marry anymore after that time.

Koh Chang Tropicana Thai Spa, photo by Sw Eden on Flickr

For the case of using gray water in flush toilets, I cannot say that the toxic rain may destroy the toilet, and the owners may need to pay more to repair whole things. I had talked with a ship owner when I went to at the south ocean of Thailand. I asked him for the reason that he still used tab water for flush toilets in the ship, because he could get salt water from the sea very easily. He told me that salt water had destroyed his flush toilets before. I cannot fully believe in his words, when I think about how much pH in human’s urine comparing with pH in salt water. The rainwater should not have less pH than human’s urine, too. That’s mean using gray water may be good enough to be considered as a part of green design.

The Gherkin Building in London should be praised, especially its system of natural air ventilation which is created by the tower’s aerodynamic form and ‘double skin’ facade (Hannah Bullock, http://www.forumforthefuture.org.uk, 2003). Moreover it support the biking people by its bicycle service.

Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden, photo by Sw Eden on Flickr

For car industry, many new electricity cars were produced, because people believe that using the electric city is better for environment rather that using benzene. If they consider about electricity producing process, both types of cars are not much different. Most electricity is from coal factory outside the city. To use electricity cars is only move the pollution in the city to outside the city. All still heat up the world.

To get a clear energy may cost higher at the first installing, but it works very well in long term and it is also good to the world, too. The words that pop-up in your head should be solar, wind and water from dam. We can also think about other cheaper things to install, such as roof pond and water coil on the roof to make hot water for hot country.

Concrete Dam Water Container, photo by Sw Eden on Flickr

Dams are something truly green, although they do not look green. A dam does not only produce a lot of electricity, but it can be the biggest green project in the world. Although the government have to destroy a lot of forest area to make a dam and the concrete surface can heat up the temperature around, the dam can keep the water to serve people all year long. When people have water to use, especially for agriculture, they will create the evergreen lands around the rivers, because the rivers have never dried. The places that had been desert during the summer time, the dams can make it to be evergreen territory for whole year. I visited many dams in Thailand during my vacations. The weather was quite hot, especially on the highest part of the dams. People cannot stand without umbrellas in the sunny day. I looked into the town side, and I was very impressed. All territory was green with banana and rice farms. That dam is, “Kun-Dan” Dam (เขื่อนขุนด่าน) in Nakorn Nayok.

เขื่อนขุนด่าน Kun-Dan Dam, photo by Sw Eden on Flickr

I was in a seminar of Dr. Smith Dharmasaroja with other Silpakorn University professors and students in 2008. Dr. Smith explained about the disaster from the dam in the north part of the world. He said that that the current planet earth was just like a feeble spinning top with 23 degree leaning, and if people kept making dams above the equator, the earth would be end faster. Most of the lands on the earth are above the equator, so most of the dams will be above equator, too. This may be real, but I cannot fully believe it, because I cannot know if the south part of the world is exact the below part of the spinning top. The words, “North Pole” and “South Pole” are only what humans used to call for representation. (The first map was made by European, so they would love to show themselves on the North.) If we do not consider about what Dr. Smith said, the dam is still not so useful in many ways as I mentioned before.

Snow At prospect park, photo by Sw Eden on Flickr

I also have another reason to support that the south pole can be the top part of the world, if the world acts like a spinning top. Generally, we know that a biggest ozone hole is at the south pole, and the air of south pole is the lowest moisture air in the world (like the desert air). That mean the south pole does not have much of substance in atmosphere. If we notice the hurricane which acts in the same way, we will see the cloudless space at the eye of hurricane, which is the top part of it. That is the reason that I guess that the south pole is the real top side of the world. You can simply test this method at home. You just have a bowl of water with some sand or dust in it, and then you stir the water around; you will see the dust crowd at the bottom, and the water is hollow at the top when you are stirring.

NASA already found the water on the moon. It also loves to research the Mar. That means humans are looking for new places to live. Why don’t they want to make the world better rather than being hopeless to keep the world green. We cannot stop people who cut the trees down. We cannot stop people who burn the forest. We cannot stop people who keep punching the holes at the north pole for their ice testings (the ice melts faster if the bigger surface touch the water). We cannot stop people who consume everything wastefully. The results are bigger and stronger hurricanes and toxic. Finally, their acts just kill other innocent people who may have never hurt the world.

Welcoming Celebration for the Fresh Men (รับน้อง)

This is 2 years after those days, I believe that all my friends who stood with me in that darkness can remember as same as me. Really, it was just a kind of celebration for the fresh men in University, but the seniors did it in negative way. They were just older than us, the fresh men, only 2 years. They said that what they did, are important and beneficial for us, and we all had to do the same thing, but until now, I have never found any benefit that they gave us.

The seniors faked and betrayed the fresh men. Because the university was in country where was far from Bangkok city around 2 hours on high way, whose parents did not have car or did not have time, had to rent apartments or rooms for their children. For my house, it was just 1 hours to get the university, so I did not need any room for staying there. For the students who lived in that province, they should not rent any room, too. When the first day at university came, the senior tried to pretend us that everybody all had to rent a room because the first year Architecture students had a lot of homework and a lot of group work, and many time, we had to stay at studio till midnight. Most of my friends believed them, and that was possible for us who were not the sophisticate. I believed them, too, so I asked my parent to rent a room for me, and that was pretty expensive because I did nothing on it after I know the realistic of the savage seniors. The first year student did not have any hard homework or a lot of group work. We had never stayed at studio till midnight, but we had to stay at lower level from 6 pm till midnight on Monday to Friday. The savage seniors always called every fresh man to be there and began roar around us who had to close the eyes and bow the head down. They called this act, “the repair”, it meant the repair of our behavior because they thought that our behavior was wrong, anyway it was right. I was one of the fresh men who could not escape from this rule, but when I could not endure with the seniors’ jeering roaring anymore, I swore with myself that I would never come to “the repair” again. After that, I was in the dilemma between I hated to go to “the repair”, and all my friends who could not bring me to “the repair” had to get the punishments from seniors. Most punishments were push-up for the boys and sit on the air for the girls.

Once in that semester, we had a lot of individual homework and had to finish it within one day, but we had to go to “the repair”, too. That was not my problem because I would not go there, but it was my friends’ problem. There was a group of pretending seniors who seemed like kind women, they advise some of my friends to copy the homework for other students and let other students go to “the repair” without doing any homework, so my friends did. When the deadline of that homework came, The professor knew that my friends was the copiers for all students in the class, that was evidently from that pretending seniors who told the professor. The professor deducted every student’s grade and deduct my grade, too although my homework was not from that copier friends. I grasped that we were just the foolish of the betraying senior who could not have any pretext.

All he seniors’ rules were so absurd to do. They always told the first year students in “the repair” that 1) Who were here before are older, and who were here after were younger: 2) The olders were greater than younger: 3) If the olders did something wrong, went back to see 1) and 2). That was the reason why the fresh men had to do everything by the seniors’ orders. There was an order which I thought that was a little right, but it was still absurd, the girls could not be in any place without the boy. Really, it kept us to stay secure, but in university was already secure because there were only students from other major who walked around as same as book store or library in a regular university. Here also meant I could not go somewhere with only the female friends, too. In my opinion, if I went as a group of girls, I did not need the have a boy in the group all the time. Each girl had to have a male buddy to follow every time. If the seniors saw a girl or many girls go somewhere without the boy, they would remember and punished the buddies of those girls to push-up. The senior also wanted us to remember all friends’ student ID. I thought this was the most stupid thing to do. There were more than 90 students in my major, and each student had 7 numbers in student ID. If they found that I could not remember, they would blame me in front of all my friends that I did not care them.

A year later when my friends were not the fresh men anymore, there was no rule and “the repair” (ซ่อมน้อง) so we was able to do whatever we wanted, but many things that the seniors left were still stick to us. Most of us hated the senior. Some of us hated each other who let them get the punishment. There were 2 students had gasp disease, they were easy to have convulsion when they were tired. One of the two was a girl. The tall seniors crowd around her and blamed that she was not endure. For the boy, the seniors pushed him down and let him wallow on the floor, then he convulsed, but the seniors did not have any drug for him. Our parents also hated the seniors especially the boys’ parents. The male seniors required 200 baths from each first year students to buy alcohol for their party, but some students did not have enough money, they had to ask from their parents. Another thing that they did for celebration of the welcoming us was the boys who wore their new uniform (because they are 1 year student, they had new uniform.) had to wallow in soggy mud. The seniors did not think about the parents who just brought new uniforms for their child. After that, those uniforms could not be washed so the students had to throw them away. More than the bad things that the seniors left for us, they also left the bad health. Most of the male fresh men had never smoked before, but the seniors forced them to smoke till they became addicts. These were just some bad things that we could not left then behind.

This smack was so strong, hard and bitter. I did not want to keep it for my juniors when I became the senior. I said solely to my friends who wanted to do this to our juniors as same as what we got together. They just ignored and said that was the tradition of Architecture in this university. For the professors, they did not care, and some of they also support because those professor had been the senior before. Now, I do not understand how they can be happy on other pain, or it was just for revenge to the next juniors.

I lost my way

Sw Eden had a really great professor last semester. He said that he loved architecture at Yale university; specially the Beinecke library. Its walls are made of many sheets of marble so people who sat in there could see the light throw the wall.

photo from Flickr.com

Sw Eden went to Yale in last semester and tried to find this building. Sw Eden had a map which was printed from Yale website in hands, but Sw Eden could not find it. Sw Eden was at Church street and asked some people how to go the Beinecke library. They pointed along the Grove street so Sw Eden walked there. Sw Eden saw the old library. Sw Eden thought that maybe, the Beinecke library was not around here.

You can see my path in blue line. I was there for 3 hours and could not find the destination. I walked around every where in Yale and got home at night.I also had to spend $28 for the rail road from New York City.
